CERT.
Prepared neighbors.
A stronger Village.
The Community Emergency Response Team helps communities prepare and share information during a disaster. In Century Village, building representatives provide an important link between residents and community coordination.
Volunteer preparedness, with training and clear limits.
CERT stands for Community Emergency Response Team. The national program trains volunteers in disaster preparedness and basic response skills. Participation should follow the local program’s training, supervision, and safety procedures.
Century Village’s published hurricane guide describes CERT planning, refresher training, exercises, and community coordination. Ask UCO about current local meetings and how to contact the CERT team.
Call 911 first for a serious emergency. CERT and a building representative do not replace emergency dispatch, professional responders, or your household’s evacuation plan.
What an association CERT representative does.
The supplied responsibilities sheet asks each association president to designate a building representative for emergencies. It directs associations to include the representative’s name and phone number on the officer/delegate form and post that contact on the association bulletin board.
Being named as a building contact does not by itself establish that someone has completed CERT training. Ask the local team what preparation is required and how the representative role relates to trained team membership.
Make a clear building report.
| Report area | Useful details |
|---|---|
| Location and contact | Association, building, unit or affected area, representative, and callback information. |
| Resident status | What help is needed and whether 911 has already been called for an emergency. Separate confirmed information from unanswered check-ins. |
| Visible building damage | Observed roof, window, or other damage; do not enter unsafe areas to inspect. |
| Access hazards | Observed flooding, fallen trees, or obstructions, with a precise location. |
| No damage observed | A dated report that the building was checked and what could safely be observed. |
The sheet lists UCO at 561-683-9189 as the reporting contact and describes relaying reports to a command center at the UCO office when telephone service fails. Confirm the current reporting channel, activation arrangements, and backup process before a storm.
Do not travel through dangerous conditions to deliver a report. Follow current official directions and the team’s safe communication arrangements.
Be ready, reachable, and considerate.
- Know your building contact. Find the representative’s details on your bulletin board or ask your association.
- Make your own plan. Arrange supplies, assistance, destination, and transportation before a storm.
- Share relevant information. Help the representative understand preparation needs and report what you actually observe.
- Keep assistance within safe limits. Do not enter hazardous buildings, floodwater, or damaged areas to perform a check.
Protect neighbors’ privacy. Gather and share only information needed for authorized assistance and reporting; avoid posting personal health details on public notices.
Clear information helps the community understand where help is needed.
Keep the contact current and confirm the process.
Associations can identify a representative, plan backup coverage, keep emergency contacts current, and explain the reporting process to residents. UCO publishes a Delegate, Officer & CERT Contact Form on its Forms & Resources page.
The supplied responsibilities sheet also includes older floor-location advice and insurer-specific recovery arrangements. These should not be treated as universal shelter or coverage instructions. Use current official evacuation guidance, building-specific advice, and your actual insurer’s claim procedures.
