Community life & participation
Share your time.
Bring a little
joy to the Village.
Share your experience, meet neighbors, and help the Village. Explore two separate paths:
recreation-related volunteering through WPRF and community office or committee service through UCO.

Path one · WPRF recreation volunteering
Help make recreation feel like community.
WPRF—West Palm Recreational Facilities—manages Century Village West Palm Beach’s recreational
facilities, including pools, classes, theater, and resident ID services. For recreation-related volunteer
questions, contact WPRF and ask who coordinates the area that interests you.
The March 2024 UCO Reporter highlighted theater ushers and library attendants among the residents contributing
volunteer time. Those are documented community examples, rather than a promise that either role is recruiting
today.
Ask about current needs. This page is a guide to getting involved, not a live
vacancy list. WPRF can confirm which assignments are available, who organizes them, and how to apply.
Find your fit
Recreation-related roles to ask about.
Theater ushering
Theater ushers are a documented volunteer example in community reporting. Ask who coordinates the usher
team, whether new volunteers are needed, and what a shift involves.
Possible duties to discuss include welcoming patrons, helping them locate seats, and referring questions to
staff. Actual duties are set by the coordinator.
Library assistance
Community reporting also recognizes library attendants. Ask about present library arrangements and whether
assistance with welcoming readers or organizing materials is needed.
Confirm the location, supervisor, procedures, and schedule before committing.
Other recreation help
If you prefer a short project or have a particular skill, ask whether WPRF or an approved activity
organizer could use your help.
Event preparation, participant welcome, or organizing materials are ideas to propose—not verified WPRF
openings.
Interested in sharing a hobby or teaching? Ask the class office about its separate proposal process and whether
an instructor role is volunteer or paid. A class listing does not establish a volunteer opportunity.
Why lend a hand?
Your experience can make someone’s day easier.
Meet your neighborsA shared task gives you a natural reason to
talk, connect, and become more familiar with community life.
Use skills you already havePatience, organization, a friendly
welcome, and clear communication can be useful contributions.
Help others feel includedA calm explanation or a thoughtful
referral to staff can make a first visit less confusing for a new resident.
Choose a commitment you can enjoy and maintain. A clearly defined assignment is easier to fit around family
visits, appointments, travel, and other activities.
Getting started
One conversation is a good beginning.
- Choose your interest. Think about theater, library service, or another recreation-related
activity.
- Contact WPRF. Call 561-640-3120 or ask at the Main Clubhouse
staff office to be directed to the relevant coordinator.
- Describe your availability. Explain whether you are seasonal or year-round and what days or
times suit you.
- Ask about the process. Confirm openings, eligibility, any application or screening,
orientation, and training.
- Agree on the assignment. Understand your duties, supervisor, schedule, and how to cancel or
report a problem.
“I live in Century Village and would like to help with recreation activities. I’m interested in [area]
and available [days or times]. Are there current volunteer needs, and who should I speak with about the
requirements?”
Do not send personal documents or sensitive information through this website. Obtain any required application
directly from the coordinator.
A role that works for you
Ask practical questions before you commit.
Time & physical demandsHow long is a shift? Does it involve
standing, stairs, walking, carrying materials, or evening travel? Ask whether seated work or a shorter
assignment is possible.
Training & supportWho provides orientation? What should you do
when a resident needs help? Who handles ticket problems, access questions, or emergencies?
Seasonal availabilityCan the team use help for part of the year or
one event? What attendance and notice requirements apply?
Ask the organizer about any dress requirements, credentials, equipment, and role-specific procedures. Do not
assume volunteers receive free tickets, priority access, waived fees, or other benefits; confirm any
arrangements directly.
Keep the role clear
Be welcoming, and know when to refer.
Follow the coordinator’s instructions, protect resident information, and refer access disputes or policy
questions to authorized staff. Helping at an activity does not automatically give a volunteer authority to
change rules, admit guests, approve accommodations, or act as security.
A club using a WPRF room may recruit its own helpers. Confirm whether your assignment is with WPRF, the theater
team, or the club itself. Each organizer may have a different process.
For an immediate emergency, call 911. Follow the facility’s emergency
procedures and notify the appropriate staff. A volunteer assignment is not a substitute for trained emergency or
security personnel.
Path two · UCO office & community service
Help your neighbors navigate village services.
UCO volunteering is a separate route from WPRF recreation volunteering. Its official volunteer page describes
office assignments with training, approximately three-hour shifts during office hours, and an emphasis on basic
computer skills and a willingness to learn.
Office volunteer team
Ask about current assignments helping the office serve residents. UCO provides training; confirm the
duties, availability requirements, and supervisor for the position offered.
Resident service desks
UCO’s published discussions mention occasional needs for reception, barcode/gate-pass, and investigations
assistance. Ask which areas currently need help and what training or authorization each requires.
Committee participation
Ask about volunteering with a committee whose work interests you. Committee participation has its own
selection process; an office application does not automatically appoint you to a committee.
Current openings are confirmed by UCO. These are routes to explore, not a
promise of an available assignment. Work involving resident records or applications requires the organization’s
instructions and confidentiality practices.
How to get started with UCO
- Read UCO’s official volunteering page and obtain its current application.
- Describe your skills, interests, and availability, including seasonal absences.
- Follow the application’s instructions for returning it by email or in person.
- Confirm the assignment, training, schedule, supervisor, and any eligibility requirements before beginning.
“I would like to volunteer with UCO. I am interested in [office area or committee] and available [days
or times]. What opportunities are currently open, and what is the appropriate application or selection process?”
UCO is at 2102 West Drive. Its volunteer page currently lists office hours of Monday–Thursday,
9 a.m.–noon, and Friday, noon–3 p.m. Verify current hours and appointment arrangements before visiting.
Volunteering does not automatically confer authority to approve occupancy, override service rules, act as
security, or cast delegate votes.
